Emotional Intelligence in Practice
Build the emotional intelligence needed to listen well, hold difficult conversations, manage your own emotions under pressure, and stay present with people in distress without losing yourself in their pain.
Course Overview
Emotional Intelligence in Practice equips learners with the ability to understand, manage, and work skilfully with emotion — their own and other people's. For anyone in counselling, ministry, or care work, emotional intelligence is not a soft extra; it is the instrument through which the work is done.
This course explores self-awareness, self-management, empathy, relationship management, resilience, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation. Participants will learn practical techniques for staying grounded in emotionally charged situations, building trust quickly, navigating difficult conversations, and recognising the point at which another person's distress begins to affect their own wellbeing.
What This Course Covers
01Understanding emotional intelligence, its core components, and why it underpins every helping relationship.
02Developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience — including recognising your own triggers and blind spots.
03Building empathy, active listening, and the communication skills that allow another person to feel genuinely heard.
04Managing conflict, holding difficult conversations, and maintaining composure and boundaries under pressure.
05Applying emotional intelligence to counselling, pastoral care, leadership, teamwork, and the guarding of your own wellbeing.
Learning Outcomes
✓Recognise and manage your own emotions so they inform your judgement rather than distort it.
✓Demonstrate empathy, active listening, and emotional attunement with clients, colleagues, and community members.
✓Address conflict and difficult conversations constructively, holding both honesty and respect.
✓Maintain clear emotional boundaries, distinguishing compassion from over-involvement.
✓Recognise early signs of compassion fatigue in yourself and others, and respond before they take root.
Why This Course Matters
In counselling and pastoral care, the practitioner is the instrument. Technique matters, but what a person in distress actually responds to is whether they feel understood — and that depends entirely on the emotional capacity of the person sitting across from them. Emotional intelligence is what allows you to stay steady when someone brings you their worst day, to hear what is underneath what is being said, and to remain warm without absorbing more than you can carry. It is also the first line of defence against burnout and compassion fatigue, which end more careers in this field than any lack of skill. This course provides practical tools for developing that capacity and protecting it over time.
